Can I use renewable energy if I rent my property?

Yes, renters can benefit from renewable energy solutions, but there are a few extra steps involved. If you’re interested in installing technologies like solar panels, air source heat pumps, or insulation in a rented property, you’ll need to get permission from your landlord, as these are significant improvements to the home.
Many landlords are open to renewable upgrades, especially if grants or funding are available to cover some or all of the costs. In some cases—such as with insulation or heating upgrades—grant schemes like ECO, LA Flex, or the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) are open to private tenants as well as homeowners.
If you’re a renter:
  • Speak to your landlord or letting agent about your interest in renewable energy or energy efficiency upgrades.
  • Our team can provide information and support to help explain the benefits and funding options to your landlord.
  • Some measures, like switching to a green energy tariff, don’t require changes to the property and can be done by the tenant directly.
If you’d like help starting the conversation with your landlord or want to know which options and grants are available for rented properties, just get in touch—our team is happy to assist!
